Solar energy is a well known concept around the world although not many people completely understand it. People have used solar energy for billions of years with some people doing it even without their knowledge. One of the first ingenious uses of energy from the sun was back in the 17th century when explorers harnessed energy from the sun using collection boxes and used the heat to cook food. Solar power involves using power collected from the heat and light and using it for many uses in homes and at work. A very miniscule portion of the energy from the sun is actually harnessed by people according to studies that have been conducted. This has been blamed on lack of technology to collect the energy in certain countries although other people in developed countries simply do not feel the need to harness energy from the sun when they have many other sources of energy.
Generating energy from the sun involves the use of photovoltaics and heat engines. These technologies can be classified into passive and active technologies depending on the way they are used to collect energy and convert it to power. Calculators and watches are powered by the sun using photovoltaic devices or solar cells that are directly converted into electricity. Devices manufactured for collecting sun energy as well as photovoltaic devices are classified into active technologies while designs and building materials that make it easier for inhabitants to convert heat and light into energy are classified into passive technologies for harnessing energy from the sun. These materials may include those that disperse light in certain ways and also technologies that make it possible for light to fill a certain space in a room or office.
Solar energy can be used in very many ways by people all over the world. Of these, lighting is the most common application. Building houses or buildings with spacious windows or skylights saves on the amount of artificial lighting that needs to be used in a room. Using solar water heaters or other types of heaters to warm up rooms or heat water is another common application of solar energy. Swimming pools can also be heated using the same concept of heating water. An active solar power harnessing technology that involves solar panels is used in converting energy from the sun into electricity. However, the use of solar energy is slowed down by the fact that the rays from the sun only reach the earth at certain times of the year and is based on the location, season and weather. This means that people have to collect the all the energy that they require in the period when the sun rays reach the earth.
